Generation Compatibility

Glock-compatible frames are designed to specific generation fitments. Parts from different generations are often not interchangeable:

Gen 3 Compatible: The most widely supported platform with the largest aftermarket selection. Compatible with Glock Gen 3 slides, barrels, and the broadest range of parts. Many aftermarket frames (Polymer80, Lone Wolf, Zev Technologies) are built around Gen 3 specs.

Gen 4 Compatible: Adds dual recoil spring compatibility and backstrap options. Narrower parts kit compatibility than Gen 3.

Gen 5 Compatible: Flared magwell, ambidextrous slide stop, and no finger grooves. Smallest aftermarket selection but growing rapidly.

Frame Features to Consider

Grip Texture: Factory Glock texture is functional but modest. Aftermarket frames offer aggressive stippling, RTF patterns, and laser-stippled options for improved purchase under stress or with wet hands.

Undercut Trigger Guard: Allows a higher grip, reducing muzzle rise and improving control.

Magwell Flare: A flared magwell speeds magazine changes by providing a larger funnel for the magazine.

Rail Configuration: Confirm the rail spec matches your intended weapon light. Glock uses a proprietary rail on some models; most aftermarket frames use standard Picatinny rails for broader light compatibility.

Finger Grooves: Gen 3 and Gen 4 frames have grooves; Gen 5 removed them. Many shooters prefer the clean grip surface without grooves.

Legal Considerations

The frame is the firearm. Purchasing a complete, serialized Glock-compatible frame follows standard FFL transfer procedures. Ensure all applicable state and local laws are followed.

Selection Guidelines

For most builders, a Gen 3-compatible frame offers the best parts availability and aftermarket support. Prioritize ergonomics—this is the component your hand contacts directly, so grip texture and geometry matter more than aesthetics. Brands like Zev Technologies, Agency Arms, and Lone Wolf offer quality premium options.
