Front Sight Types

Fixed: Always deployed, ready instantly. Lower profile than flip-ups but always present. Popular examples include Daniel Defense and Scalarworks.

Flip-Up: Folds down when not needed. Allows lower optic mounting and cleaner look. Springs up with button press or manual deployment.

Integrated (FSB): The A2 front sight base combines gas block and sight. Traditional military configuration. Requires compatible handguards or removal for free-float conversion.

Mounting

Picatinny Rail: Most common mounting for BUIS. Ensure proper placement for sight radius and optic compatibility.

M-LOK: Some sights mount directly to M-LOK. Less common but saves rail space.

Height Considerations

Front sights come in different heights to match various gas block heights and handguard configurations. Standard AR front sight height is designed for A2 FSB height. If using a low-profile gas block under a free-float rail, ensure your front sight matches your rear sight's design height.

Same-plane rail: Both sights mount on the receiver/rail height. Most common for free-float setups.

Folding at A2 height: For rifles with fixed FSB, rear sights must match that height.

Material and Durability

• Aluminum: Standard for quality sights. 6061 or 7075-T6.
• Polymer: Lighter and less expensive. Less durable under hard use.
• Steel: Some components (posts, springs) may be steel for durability.

Sight Post Options

Standard A2 post: Square post design. Works well with center hold or 6 o'clock hold.

Tritium: Self-illuminated for low light. The front sight is most critical for tritium.

Fiber optic: Gathers ambient light for bright aiming point. Not visible in complete darkness.

Selection Guidelines

For backup sights behind an optic, folding sights keep the lowest profile. If irons are your primary sighting system, fixed sights are faster to deploy. Match your front and rear sights from the same manufacturer when possible for proper height alignment.
