AR-Platform Magazine Release

The standard AR-15 magazine release button sits on the right side of the lower receiver. Right-handed shooters activate it with the index finger while the support hand cups the magazine. Left-handed shooters must break grip or use an awkward motion.

Extended/Enhanced Buttons: A larger button surface reduces the precision required for activation and can be reached with less trigger guard interference. Popular for competition where rapid mag changes are prioritized.

Ambidextrous Magazine Releases: Add a second activation surface or paddle on the left side of the lower. The support-hand thumb or index finger can actuate it without requiring the shooting hand to reach across. Essential for left-handed shooters; useful for right-handed shooters using support-side techniques.

AK-Platform Magazine Release

The AK magazine release is a rocking lever located in front of the magazine well. The shooter pushes it rearward to release the magazine. The stock design works, but aftermarket options improve leverage and reduce the force required.

Enhanced AK Mag Catches: Products from Molot, Arsenal, and CSS offer improved geometry and larger lever surface for easier actuation.

Glock-Compatible Magazine Release

Glock's factory magazine release is reversible for left-handed use. Extended releases provide a larger surface area and in some cases reduce the force required for ejection.

Extended Mag Releases: A popular upgrade. Products from Lone Wolf, Agency Arms, and ZEV Technologies extend the button further from the frame, enabling one-handed releases with less grip shift.

Caution: An extended release can be inadvertently activated during firing or reholstering if the button is too large. Ensure your holster accommodates the extended release without inadvertent activation.

Selection Guidelines

For AR-15 builds, an enhanced button with ambi capability (Radian Weapons, BCMGUNFIGHTER) gives the most flexibility. For Glock-compatible pistols, an extended release is one of the most impactful and inexpensive upgrades. For AK builds, an enhanced mag catch reduces the force and precision required for reliable magazine changes.
